About Us
Established in 1986, Hearst Forest Management Inc. (HFMI) is the longstanding Sustainable Forest License holder for the Hearst Forest Management Unit. As a forest management company, we provide long-term forest management planning services supported by a team of forestry professionals dedicated to community, forest health, and productivity.
As a Sustainable Forest Licence (SFL) holder, we manage public land on behalf of the Government of Ontario for the people of Ontario, in accordance with Ontario’s laws, regulations, guides, and as defined in the responsibilities set out in the SFL.
HFMI is the first co-operative SFL in Ontario. Operating on consensus, HFMI’s Board of Directors is comprised of representatives of its shareholders, the local mills: Lecours Lumber Co. Limited, GreenFirst Forest Products, and Columbia Forest Products, as well as representatives of Achikamii-Achikamaw (Constance Lake) First Nation, the Municipality of Hearst, and the Municipality of Mattice-Val Côté as ex-officio members.
Our work is conducted in compliance with all requirements under the Crown Forest Sustainability Act and the Sustainable Forest License granted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
What we do
HFMI’s mandate is to efficiently assume the stewardship of the Hearst Forest and maintain or enhance the forest’s health and productivity to the benefit of the area communities that depend on the forest, now and into the future. With respect for environmental, social, cultural and economic values, our team of dedicated forestry professionals provide technical and long-term forest management planning, forest renewal, monitoring and reporting services inclusively.
Our work is conducted in compliance with all requirements under the Crown Forest Sustainability Act and the Sustainable Forest License granted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Forest Management
Managing over 1.2 million hectares of boreal forest, HFMI upholds sustainability through compliance with Ontario's rigorous forestry regulations under the Crown Forest Sustainability Act.
Operational Support
From planning approvals to on-ground forest renewal, our team ensures every step meets environmental and community standards.
Compliance Monitoring
Responsible to ensure and report that all forest operations are in compliance with provincial regulations contained in the forest management plan, we conduct regular inspections and are subject to Independent Forest Audits.
Road Maintenance
We maintain and monitor extensive forest road networks to support safe and efficient forest operations.
Forest Conservation
Dedicated to preserving ecological integrity, HFMI engages in thoughtful conservation of high-value areas and species.
Community Engagement
Through scholarships, employment, and local partnerships, we actively support the socio-economic growth of our surrounding communities.
